 Developing Stoneware Glazes

This 6 week course will introduce a basic understanding stoneware glazes and testing methods for developing unique glazes. 

Starting with an exploration of local raw materials: woodash, rock dust and local clays using lineblends, triaxial and quadraxial blends to develop a range of glazes. This will develop an appreciation of the origin of high fired glazes in China and their development in Asian ceramics.

Next base sets of glazes will be created from feldspar, limestone, magnesia and zinc in alumina/silica quadraxial bends to provide an understanding of glaze phenomena in oxidation firing. 

Then we will experiment with the use of colouring oxides and stains in different types of glaze. 

Participants will develop an appreciation of the history of stoneware glazes

and an understanding of different types of stoneware glazes and how to achieve them. 

You will be required to make and bring your own test tiles, we will send you information on the specifications.

If you are unable to do so we will have some for purchase at $8 per tile, you will need at least 7 of tthese tiles.

Studio is located at Shed 4/39 Smithton Grove, Ocean Grove

Please park on Smithton Grove as the studio parking is not availble.

What can/can't I bring to the event?

Please bring a towel, apron, dust mask and journal.

Comfortable clothing,closed shoes.
