About the event

A contemporary approach to the ancient craft of basketweaving with the very talented Caroline Hawkins.

This course commences with learning the technique of ‘twining’; a traditional basketweaving method, which has the beauty of adaptability into a wide range of sturdy baskets to soft bags, wall hangings or sculptural forms.  Creative expression will be encouraged as students develop this foundational skill into their own designs.

Experiment with different plant fibres, recycled materials, raffia or hemp string, learning how to ‘twine’ a tight weave or a lace effect, introduce a stripe or a check.

We will start with two small projects before launching into individual designs.

Course structure

Weeks one and three:

Create a small basket and a garlic basket or fish while getting to grips with the ‘twining’ techniques. Gain an understanding of the variations possible with alternative material choices, shapes and structure.

Weeks four to six:

Design your own basket.

Select, prepare and calculate materials.

Choose twining method, tight, spaced, textured, checked, coloured.

Decide on structure in relation to selected materials.

Throughout the course learning will include:

· study of existing baskets

· reference materials, books and the direction of contemporary basketmaking

· detailed information on plant fibre collection preparation and storage
